In the beginning when we moved to Vancouver 8 years ago, we were amazed of the natural beauty of the natural surroundings and the easygoing attitude that prevailed in the city.
But during the past few years the direction where the city is going has become clear to us. The provincial and municipal governments - lobbied by local real estate developers - are doing everything in their power to cramp another couple millions of people within greater Vancouver boundaries ASAP. On the other side, all eco-fascists in Vancouver are fiercely opposing capacity expansion of pretty much any other transportation mode than walking.
As a result of this, city is heading towards direction, where 4-xx million people will stuffed within existing confines of the city, and the city will be stuck with transportation infrastructure with little upgrades since the 1960's. Ultimately people living in Vancouver will have to pick their apartment tower (and the tiny $500 000 concrete cell within it) and they better make sure the tower of their choice has a grocery store which offers daily living supplies and also employment.There will be no easy way of getting around the city and people can forget about heading up to the mountains to escape the stress of the city. The recreation areas will be either virtually unaccessible or terribly overcrowded.
So, what can I say? I have been sort of itching to move out of Vancouver for some time now, and in February we were handed a golden ticket that made leaving this place very easy. We didn't hesitate to take the opportunity and get ready to leave the city. In a short while thing unraveled such way that we will be moving to Ottawa at the end of this month. When we leave the city, we will certainly miss the great friendships we developed during the years there. Time will tell, if we will miss anything else. Right now, I feel liberated.
